The path to gratitude can be found in a variety of places. The shadow in the corner shouldn’t fool us into thinking that the shadow exists only because the room is illuminated. All we need to do is look beyond the shadows and look toward the ocean of divine light and grace in which we live. There is light all around us, and many things to be grateful for in this seemingly dark world. There is nothing more wondrous and marvelous than the cascade of blessings from the universe when you become attuned and grateful to them.
Let down the ego, let down the persona that believes it created everything or perfected everything, and welcome the natural, the unexplainable, the energy that blesses our lives with vitality and magic. The path to happiness and vibrant living begins with gratitude. Every day, let’s be thankful and more appreciative:
My heart is filled with gratitude for all the light around me. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to anyone who inspires me as a caregiver.
Despite my shortcomings, my lover overlooks them. Thank you to those who sacrifice their lives to protect my freedom.
Our natural world is beautiful and has a blue tint to it. Let me be grateful for this. Thank you for giving me a heart that beats with life.
Regardless of how long last night’s sleep was, let me be thankful for it. My free will, my volition, and my endurance are gifts I should be thankful for.
My mentors and traitors were also able to instruct me; let me be grateful for both. Being fortunate to live in such squalor and need is something I should be grateful for.
It is my privilege to have a home, to have daily bread, and to have clean water. Having the chance to work, create, and earn is something I am grateful for.
Let me be thankful for the good fortune that has brought me success, as well as the disasters and tribulations that have given me insight.
Whenever I wake up in the morning, I am thankful for the blank slate that awaits me.
The clean moment at hand and my breath give me a reason to be thankful.
Let me give thanks to my Creator. We become appreciative and alive when we find so many things to be thankful for. Our goal should be to become masters of gratitude, just as we have done with joy.
A Blessing For Us
Our lives should be filled with joy and gratitude, but how do we maintain this? Every moment, we have the freedom to choose our emotional state from a broad palette of reactions and feelings. In the same way that a power plant generates energy rather than having it, we create happiness, generate it, and transform lower energies into higher energies. Similarly, joy and gratitude are not inherent in us, but are generated and experienced by our actions.
Simply by measuring how often we cultivate joy and gratitude, we can make them a daily habit and standard. We can evaluate our success several times a day by asking, “On a scale of 1-10, how much joy and gratitude am I bringing to this moment? There is power in this statement. At the moment, we are not asking about our joy and gratitude, as if these emotions were somehow ours to possess. The demand for personal responsibility is clear – what am I bringing to the table?
We become more aware of our emotional reality when we rate it, and our mind judges whether the answer is acceptable based on the quality of life we desire. Intuition will demand that we increase our focus and emotion if we are living in a state of low joy and gratitude. In some ways, self-reproach might be a blessing when it inspires us to be more grateful and happier. We are blessed, yes, and we should be thankful for everything.
